Como siempre lo primero que queremos hacer desde “EsX” es agradecer que nos dediques un poco de tu tiempo libre, sabemos que cada minuto dedicado a “Expediente X” es mucho en nuestras ajetreadas vidas y por ello es para nosotros un honor poder entrevistarte. ¡Muchas gracias! Además al ser la escritora de un libro dedicado a Kim Manners es para nosotros un doble honor, ya que todos en la página procesamos un increíble amor y respeto hacia tan gran director y productor.

Sin ganas de demorarnos más pasamos rápidamente a dejarte una serie de preguntas que nos han enviado lectores de la página y que ahora te hacemos llegar.

EsX: Para empezar: el principio. ¿Cómo surgió la idea de escribir “LAX-Files”? ¿Forma parte de algún tipo de estudio, tesis, proyecto,… o simplemente es un proyecto personal?
Erica Fraga: En realidad “LAX-Files” comenzó como una guía sobre los lugares de filmación de “Expediente X” en el sur de California, algo así como un compañero de viaje al “X Marks The Spot” de Todd Pittson. Viajé hasta British Columbia y realicé mi propio recorrido por los expedientes X y, al regresar, empecé a buscar información sobre lugares de filmación de los episodios de la serie rodados en el área de Los Ángeles. No encontré nada. Pregunté al manager de exteriores de “Expediente X” si iba a escribir su propio libro, me dijo que no, y así empezó “LAX-Files”. Cuando Kim falleció en Enero del 2009 el libro se convirtió en algo mucho más grande.

EsX: Otra pregunta obligada: ¿conociste personalmente a Manners?
Erica Fraga: No, nunca tuve el placer de conocer directamente a Kim.

EsX: ¿Qué significa para ti este libro?
Erica Fraga: Esa es una gran pregunta. Este libro representa un año de mi vida: desde localizar direcciones de exteriores, confirmar si las direcciones eran correctas y si todavía existen, hasta localizar amigos cercanos y familiares de Kim y conseguir entrevistas.
Ser capaz de honrar a Kim así es mi manera de mostrar mi aprecio por su trabajo. Ser capaz de honrar a la familia de Kim después de su fallecimiento y dejarlos con una colección de historias positivas de su influencia sobre aquellos que le rodearon es mi modo de mostrar mi admiración por él.

EsX: ¿Cuántas personas estáis involucradas en el proyecto? ¿Qué tipo de ayudas has recibido?
Erica Fraga: Muchos amigos cercanos y en los que confío se involucraron en la creación de este libro. Se les da una mención especial en una sección del libro. La ayuda que he recibido va desde diseño gráfico hasta la localización de la gente de la serie, pasando por la simple edición de los textos.

EsX: ¿Cuál fue la respuesta de la gente cuando hiciste pública la idea de escribir este libro? ¿De qué manera ayudó la gente?
Erica Fraga: ¿Te refieres a los actores y al equipo de rodaje? Antes de empezar a trabajar en la versión revisada de “LAX-Files”, pregunté a Frank Spotnitz si había alguien más trabajando en un proyecto de homenaje a Kim y, en el caso de no ser así, pedirle su bendición. Él no sabía de nadie que estuviese trabajando en un proyecto parecido así que me dijo: “¡Adelante!”. Los actores y el equipo de rodaje de la serie han apoyado mucho el proyecto y han jugado un papel decisivo en el éxito de este libro.

EsX: Tras el libro hay un afán altruista, ¿cómo fue tu relación con la familia del director y como decidiste donar lo recaudado a la “American Cancer Society”?
Erica Fraga: Sabía que quería donar las ganancias de las ventas del libro a una organización benéfica elegida por la Familia Manners. La viuda de Kim eligió a la “American Cancer Society”.

EsX: ¿Podrías darnos alguna pista de cómo conseguir el libro para todos aquellos que no vivimos en EE.UU.?
Erica Fraga: El libro estará disponible a través de “Amazon.com” y podrá comprarse en todo el planeta.

EsX: ¿Cómo fueron las entrevistas con las estrellas invitadas?
Erica Fraga: Todo aquel que trabajó en “Expediente X” puede atribuirse el mérito por el fantástico trabajo que hicieron, ya fuese delante o detrás de las cámaras. Para mí, cada persona en el show es responsable de su éxito a nivel mundial y es importante.
Todas las entrevistas se desarrollaron sin problemas; me sentía muy agradecida por la gran cantidad de personas que contestaron a mis peticiones y compartieron sus recuerdos sobre Kim y sobre el hecho de trabajar en “Expediente X”.

EsX: ¿Recuerdas alguna entrevista especialmente emotiva con alguno de ellos? ¿O quizás alguna curiosidad “no confesable”?
Erica Fraga: ¡Ay de mí! Cualquier cosa confesada confidencialmente permanecerá bien guardada bajo llave en mi caja fuerte. Siempre hubo una historia conmovedora o divertida sobre Kim o sobre “Expediente X” en general en todas las entrevistas que realicé. La mayoría de ellas se incluyen en el libro.

EsX: ¿Estás contenta con el resultado final?
Erica Fraga: Estoy muy contenta y orgullosa del resultado final, espero haber hecho justicia a la memoria de Kim y hacer que su familia se sienta aún más orgullosa de él de lo que ya lo están.

- Ahora un poco sobre “Expediente X”:

EsX: ¿Recuerdas tú primer contacto con la serie?
Erica Fraga: El primer episodio que vi de “Expediente X” fue “El Hombre De Los Milagros”, de la Primera Temporada, en 1993. Mi hermano pequeño ya estaba enganchado a la serie y me hizo dejar los deberes escolares y ver el capítulo con él. He estado enganchada desde entonces.

EsX: Tras 16 años la serie sigue viva y acciones como la tuya sirven para refrescarla una y otra vez. ¿Qué tiene de especial esta serie?

Erica Fraga: “Expediente X” es especial por varias razones. A mi parecer, la calidad de producción, los guiones, las actuaciones, la dirección, todo ello se juntó para hacer algo que nadie más hacía en televisión en aquel entonces y que tampoco se hace en la actualidad. Según mi opinión “Expediente X” no era una serie de televisión normal. Realizar cada episodio era como realizar un largometraje de gran presupuesto donde todo el mundo tenía que dar lo mejor de sí mismo.

- Y ahora nos separamos brevemente de “Expediente X”:

EsX: ¿Qué nos puedes contar de trabajos anteriores al de Manners en nuestra serie? ¿Cómo fueron sus inicios en “Jóvenes Policías” o “Brico County Jr.”?
Erica Fraga: Kim empezó a dirigir por primera vez en “Los Ángeles de Charlie”, en 1978. Su manera de dirigir única y encantadora le proporcionaron estos trabajos.

EsX: ¿Qué recuerdas de ellos?
Erica Fraga: Conseguí ver reposiciones de “Jóvenes Policías” años más tarde, pero me encantaba “Brisco County Jr.” porque soy fan de Bruce Campbell. Tal vez os acordéis de Bruce por su papel como Wayne Weinesider en el episodio “Muestras De Afecto” de la Sexta Temporada.

EsX: A este respecto, ¿hablas de ellos también en el libro o sólo de la etapa en Los Ángeles?
Erica Fraga: Hay una pequeña biografía sobre los primeros trabajos de Kim es mencionada en el libro, y varios miembros de reparto o del equipo, como Rob (Bowman) y Mitch (Pileggi), trabajaron con Kim en las series mencionadas anteriormente.

EsX: ¿Has hablando con gente de “Sobrenatural”? Recordemos que es la última serie en la que el director trabajaba y donde colaboraba en el triste momento de su fallecimiento.
Erica Fraga: Hice varios intentos para contactar con miembros del equipo de rodaje y con los actores de “Sobrenatural”  al empezar a trabajar en “LAX-Files”, pero parece ser que el fallecimiento de Kim ha dejado un vacío importante en las vidas de todo el equipo en Vancouver, ya que nadie respondió a ninguna de mis peticiones. Me imagino que el dolor es todavía muy reciente para ellos.

EsX: Muchas gracias por tu tiempo, realmente ha sido un placer ponernos en contacto contigo y haber realizado esta interesante charla. Esperamos que sea un libro que haga que futuras generaciones no olviden a Kim Manners y conozcan su gran labor por el mundo de la televisión.

First and foremost we at “Expediente X” (“EsX”) would like to appreciate your time. It is our honour for us to make this interview, bearing in mind how busy our lives run nowadays. Besides, being the author of a book dedicated to Kim Manners makes it even better, a big deal for us due to we at “EsX” have much love and respect to the amazing director and producer was.

So let us get straight to the point. Here you have the questions our members, readers and fans have sent to you. There you go!!

EsX: How did the idea of writing “LAX-Files” come up? Is it some sort of thesis, project or educational work…or is it just a personal goal?
Erica Fraga: “LAX-Files” actually began as Southern California ‘X-Files’ location guide; a companion piece to Todd Pittson’s “X Marks The Spot”.  I had travelled to British Columbia and conducted my own “X-Files” tour.  When I returned, I began looking for location information for “X-Files” shows filmed in the Los Angeles area.  I found none.  I asked the location manager on “The X-Files” if he was going to write his own book, he said no, so began “LAX-Files”. Once Kim passed away in January 2009, the book became so much more.

EsX: Did you meet Kim Manners?
Erica Fraga: No, I never had the pleasure of meeting Kim directly.

EsX: What does this book mean to you?
Erica Fraga: This is a great question.  This book represents a year of my life, from tracking down location address, confirming if the addresses were valid and still in existence, to tracking down friends and family close to Kim and securing interviews.
To be able to honor Kim like this is my way of showing my appreciation for his work.  To be able to honor Kim’s family after his passing, and leave them with a collection of positive stories of his influence on those around him is my way of showing my admiration for him.

EsX: How many people are involved in the project? What kind of help did you get in order to carry out on it?
Erica Fraga: Many close and trusted friends were involved in the making of this book. They have been given special mention in a section of the book. The help I received ranges from graphic design to tracking down the talent to simple word editing.

EsX: How did the people answer when you first announced the idea of writing such a book?  How did the people have a hand in it?
Erica Fraga: Do you mean the cast and crew? Before I began to work on the revised version of “LAX-Files”, I asked Frank Spotnitz if there was someone else working on a tribute project to Kim and if not, I asked for his blessing. He knew of no one else and gave me the go ahead.  The cast and crew have been very supportive of the project and have been instrumental to the success of this book.

EsX: We see there’s an altruistic cause behind the book. How were the relationships with Kim Manners’ family and how did you end up donating the benefits to the American Cancer Society was the best choice?
Erica Fraga: I knew I wanted to donate the profits of the book sales to a charity of the Manner’s Family choosing. Kim’s widow selected the “American Cancer Society”.

EsX: Tell us how can we get the book outside of the USA.
Erica Fraga: The book will be available for worldwide purchase through “Amazon.com”.

EsX: How did the interviews with the Special Guest go?
Erica Fraga: Everyone who worked on “The X-Files” is credited for the superb work that they did, whether it be in front or behind the camera. To me, everyone on the show is responsible for the global success of the show and is important.
All of the interviews went smoothly; I was truly blessed to so many people respond to my requests and share their memories of knowing Kim and working on “The X-Files”.

EsX: Do you recall a very special touching moment in any of those conversations? Maybe some confidential curiosity?
Erica Fraga: Alas, anything said in confidence will stay locked away in my vault.  Everyone I interviewed had a touching or funny story about Kim or “The X-Files” in general. Most of those stories have made it into the book.

EsX: Are you happy with the final result?
Erica Fraga: I am very pleased and proud of the final result, and I hope I was able to do Kim’s memory justice and make his family even more proud of him than they already are.

- Now a bit about The X-Files:

EsX: How was your first contact with the show? Do you remember?
Erica Fraga: My first episode of “The X-Files” was Season 1 “Miracle Man” in 1993.  My younger brother was already hooked onto the show and he made me stop studying and watch “The X-Files” with him. I have been hooked ever since.

EsX: After 16 years the show’s still alive and achievements such as this book are very helpful to keep it fresh and contemporary. Why is the show so special?
Erica Fraga: “The X-Files” are special for a number of reasons. In my opinion, the production quality, the writing, acting and directing all came together and did something that no one else on television had done at the time, and still has not done, in my opinion. “The X-Files” was not a regular television show; making every episode was like making a big budget feature film and everyone had to be on their “A” game.

- And now a couple of questions regarding other Kim Manners’ works and productions:

EsX: What can you tell us about Kim Manners’ early works and productions? How were his beginnings at “21 Jump Street” or “Brisco County”?
Erica Fraga: Kim first began to direct in 1978 on “Charlie’s Angels”.  His captivating and unique style of directing landed him those jobs.

EsX: What do you remember of them?
Erica Fraga: I caught re-runs of “21 Jump Street” when I was older, but I loved “Brisco County Jr.” because I am a Bruce Campbell fan. You may remember Bruce as Wayne Weinesider from Season 6 “Terms Of Endearment”.

EsX: In this respect, do you make any contributions to them in the book or just his years in Los Angeles regarding “The X-Files”?
Erica Fraga: A brief biography of Kim’s early works is mentioned in the book, and several cast and crew members, like Rob and Mitch, have worked with Kim on the aforementioned shows.

EsX: Kim was producing and directing Supernatural when he passed away.  Did you have the chance to speak with the staff and crew of that show? If so, what kind of feelings did you get from them?
Erica Fraga: Several attempts were made to contact the Supernatural cast and crew members once I began work on LAX-Files, but Kim’s passing has left such a gaping hole in the lives of the Vancouver cast and crew, that no one responded to any of the requests.  I presume the pain is still too fresh for them.

EsX: We would like to thank you once again your time and cooperation. It’s been our pleasure meeting you by all means and we hope the book will be having a positive reception so future generations won’t forget Kim Manners and his sensational work in the Television business.
